What Are the Components That Make Up a Car Battery

Smith · March 31, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Every time you activate your vehicle’s ignition, it goes through a chemical and electrical process to deliver enough power to your vehicle to start it. The main element in this process is your vehicle’s car battery. Inside of the battery, there are components that give your vehicle enough power to run its lights and radio when the engine is off and the powerful charge to start your vehicle every time you go somewhere. Find out what is inside of an auto battery and how it delivers that charge every time you turn the ignition.

How To Make Your Car Battery Isn’t Malfunctioning

It’s important to understand how a battery works in your car to make sure it’s doing what it’s supposed to. A battery works by creating a chemical reaction to make a charge. Sulfuric acid and water inside of the battery react and create enough voltage to start the vehicle. Most batteries on the market are at least 12 volts. A charge is considered to be viable if the battery has at least 12.4 volts.

Inside of an auto battery charger, there are many different parts that work together to power a vehicle’s lights and radio when it’s off and assist the starter with ignition. Surrounding the entire unit and protecting the contents inside is the battery case, made of a strong resin. There is also a lid to help keep everything secure.

If you were to lift up the protective case, you would see additional components inside. Auto batteries have a series of plates that help generate a charge. There is a positive plate and a negative plate. The positive plate has a metal lead oxide grid along with it The negative plate features a spongy lead oxide grid with it to help activate its charge.

The positive and negative plates must be separated within the unit to make it operational. Inside of a battery, the battery separator is positioned between the positive and negative plates. It is made from a polyethylene material. Additionally, there is also battery acid, cast on straps to connect to the terminals and battery paste adhesive inside of a battery unit.

How To Connect to a Battery Charger

Installing a battery into a vehicle can be an easy task that most car owners can handle themselves. To start, do a VIN number lookup to make sure you get the correct battery for your vehicle model and make. Once you get a matching battery, you need to take out the old one before replacing it. It’s best to do this with some gloves and other tools, such as wrenches.

Turn off the car and pop up the hood to take out the old battery first. Loosen the connection and detach the battery on the negative side first, and then the positive side before removing the battery unit. When it’s time to connect the new battery, place it in the reservoir and connect the cables on the positive side first. Then, connect the negative components.

Your vehicle’s battery is an essential part that helps ensure you can operate your car each day. Make sure you understand when to replace it and how to get a quality battery that will last and meet your vehicle’s specifications.
