5 Biggest Challenges Of Military Life

Smith · July 6, 2020 · Leave a Comment

In some ways, a career in the military is just like any other job. It comes with its perks and its downfalls. Those who have a passion for serving their country love the emotional reward that the job provides. However, along with the pride of fighting for your country also comes a considerable amount of challenges. It can be difficult to balance your job with your family life, especially if you have children.

Take a look at some of the most common difficulties that people in the military say they are faced with.

Stress

The military requires a substantial amount of determination and self-discipline. Some people think that they’re up for the stress of the military when in fact, they find that they’re not suited for it at all.

There can be social challenges and inner turmoil that come along with the job. Beyond the mental strain, it can also be incredibly physically stressful. If you’re not prepared to work strenuously with your body and your brain, then it won’t be long before you burn out.

Deployments

Sometimes people in the military aren’t sure when they’ll be deployed. It can be tremendously stressful to find that you need to leave all of a sudden when you have children at home.

Some people find themselves being deployed more than three times a year, which can start to take its toll on your family life.

Financial Stress

As with any job, people in the military also often find themselves worrying about how they make ends meet.

It’s natural to worry about your financial security and the well-being of your spouse when you’re away on deployment. Many military members also find themselves concerned about retirement benefits and whether they’ll be taken care of in their old age.

Isolation From Friends

Unlike any other job, the military doesn’t call for going to the office and coming home at the end of the day. It can be challenging to have a set routine with friends and family, only to find that suddenly you’re uprooted from it all when deployed.

It can be difficult to communicate with your loved ones back home and feel like you’re on the outside looking in. It’s not uncommon for military personnel to feel isolated from their loved ones back home.

Marital Problems

One of the biggest shared concerns of people in the military is relationship stress. It can be difficult to be away from your partner for long periods of time, and in some cases, it can even lead to divorce.

Many people find that being separated for long periods of time eventually starts to take its toll on the well-being of their romantic relationships.
