Why Cats Make Great Family Pets

Smith · January 7, 2019 · Leave a Comment

Cats make excellent family pets. No one is saying that dogs aren’t great too, but I’ll never understand how they’re billed as “Man’s Best Friend” when we’ve got cats. Cats are cleaner than dogs. They’re smarter too. They don’t smell. And, overall, cats are much easier to care for.

Cats Don’t Need a Huge Living Space
Unlike dogs, who require a lot of room to run around and play in, cats are content with a relatively small living space. Apartments, studios and tiny homes are all acceptable dwellings for a cat. Just be sure they have access to perches, toys and a couple of places to hide when the garbage trucks drive by.

You Don’t Need to Walk Them
Another major difference between dogs and cats is that cats don’t need to be walked. Some will wear a harness and will even walk with you, just like a dog. But they are the exception, rather than the rule. Cats get most of their exercise through play. Laser pointers, Thing-on-a-String, and other cat-centric toys will keep them entertained and happy most of the time.

They’re Good for You
Countless studies have shown that a feline companion can have positive health benefits. Cat owners have lower blood pressure, less depression and lower stress levels overall. There also appears to be a correlation between owning a cat and a healthier immune system!

Cats Are Self Reliant
Cats enjoy play with their owners, and they are avid snugglers. But they do not require your constant attention. They can and will keep themselves occupied and entertained, whiling away the hours watching birds and insects through the living room window or playing with a paper bag on the floor.

They’re Just Good Company
Cats are great companions. They aren’t demanding, they don’t smell and they are endlessly entertaining. They seem to know when you’re sick or sad and will snuggle up to you if they sense you’re not feeling well.

They Aren’t Picky Eaters
Cats are not picky, and will eat most store-bought cat food. That being said, variety is the spice of life and many soft foods come in different flavors. Salmon dinner, turkey and giblets, and whitefish are common favorites.

They Are Low Maintenance

Cats do not require being let out. Unlike dogs, who need to be taken out every few hours cats care for themselves in this department. Cats can sleep for up to sixteen hours every day. You do not even have to train your cat. Show them the litter box, and you are all set. Recently, automated litter boxes have become popular, which makes the process even easier!
